Surfs up off Tasmania
September 22, 2006 on 8:42 am | In Surf Reports | No CommentsWhat’s presumed to be the largest recorded wave ever measured in Australia occurred off the coast of Tasmania at 9am (AEST). How huge was it?? A massive 19.5meters! (64ft for all you old timers that wont keep with the times!
)
What a sight that would have been to see its rise & fall! As an old surfer from days gone past, that wave would have brought tears to our eyes.
Gale force winds produced the massive wave. A waverider buoy located 10 kilometres from Cape Sorell, on Tasmania’s west coast, recorded the wave.
Swellnet website forecaster Ben Matson said “It was probably a combination of several waves that all combined at the one time to produce this single enormous wave”.
“Large swells are common in the Southern Ocean at this time of year but wave heights of this magnitude are extremely rare.”
Death of a Legend
September 8, 2006 on 10:31 am | In General Info | No CommentsHow sad it was to hear about the death of Peter Brock today. Brocky has always hailed my respect for over 30 years because of his contribution then & since to the auto industy & car racing in Australia.
He wasn’t just a car racing hero… he was a legend.
RIP Brocky!
Death of an Icon
September 4, 2006 on 10:44 am | In General Info | No CommentsHe was known everywhere for over a decade as the Crocodile Hunter, but to others on a more personal level… he was Steve Irwin, an Aussie bloke. He died doing what he enjoyed the most, getting very close to nature.
Aside from his media presence, he had also contributed great efforts towards species conservation at his Australia Zoo.
RIP Steve Irwin!
